Earlier this year, Powerledger integrated Wormhole’s Native Token Transfers (NTT) standard to make POWR token a multichain asset. This expanded POWR beyond Ethereum and launched it natively on Solana. At the time, we were excited to share the milestone. But now, we want to offer a closer look at the thinking behind our approach. By leveraging Wormhole’s Native Token Transfer (NTT) standard, we’ve expanded POWR to a second blockchain without resorting to wrapped or synthetic tokens. This significant difference allows POWR to now exist as a native token on multiple chains (starting with Solana), preserving the token’s authenticity and simplifying the user experience. This marks a big step in connecting two vibrant ecosystems under one token, aligning with our belief that collaboration across blockchains is key to greater reach and efficiency.
Why Multichain, and Why Solana?
Supporting POWR on multiple chains is about giving our community choice and flexibility. Ethereum has a massive user base and a rich DeFi ecosystem, while Solana offers high-speed transactions with minimal fees. With the current ability to tap into Ethereum’s extensive dApp network as well as Solana’s growing ecosystem and lightning-fast throughput, POWR users can choose the network that best suits their needs at any moment.
Expanding to Solana was a natural move for Powerledger. We first deployed POWR on Solana’s mainnet in late 2024, alongside integrating our energy and asset trading platforms (TraceX and xGrid) into the Solana ecosystem. This multichain presence isn’t just a technical milestone – it aligns with our mission of democratising access to energy markets globally. Solana’s speed and low costs can facilitate everyday energy transactions, while Ethereum’s robustness offers security and broad integration. Bridging these two major Layer-1 networks gives POWR greater reach and efficiency on a global scale through a multichain POWR token for a bigger, more accessible Powerledger for everyone.
Why Wormhole’s NTT over Traditional Bridging Solutions?
When connecting tokens across chains, not all bridge solutions are equal. We chose Wormhole’s NTT approach over traditional bridges for a few key reasons:
- No Wrapped Tokens, Only Real POWR: Typical bridges mint wrapped versions on the target chain.
- These synthetic tokens aren’t the actual POWR – they’re IOUs that can introduce liquidity fragmentation (imagine multiple “POWR” versions that aren’t interchangeable).
- With Wormhole NTT, there are no wrapped substitutes; instead, POWR is deployed natively on each chain and moved via burn/mint mechanics. The result is that POWR on Solana is the real POWR, not a placeholder, preserving the token’s integrity and value continuity across chains.
- Simplicity and Consistency: Using Wormhole’s NTT standard keeps things simple for our users and developers. Wormhole’s technology is the gold standard of multichain bridges at this time, and the tools provided allow configuration and deployment details to be updated easily.
- Network Effects: Powerledger is now strategically positioned to expand to additional blockchains in the future, leveraging the same toolset.
- Unified Liquidity, No Fragmentation: As a consequence of using Wormhole NTT, it allows a single canonical token on each chain, we avoid splitting the market into “wrapped POWR” vs “real POWR” pools. All POWR on Solana and Ethereum represents the same circulating supply moving between networks, transferring value instead of double-counting it.
- This unification leads to better liquidity and pricing. Traditional bridges, on the other hand, often create isolated liquidity silos for each wrapped version, which can result in a bad UX and suboptimal markets.
- By preserving one true POWR across chains, we keep markets efficient and user confidence high and reduce potential user confusion.
After all is said and done, Wormhole’s NTT offered us a secure and elegant cross-chain solution: no more wrapped duplicates, no third-party custody of tokens, and no confusion. Just one POWR, freely moving where users want it to go.
Benefits of Native Multichain POWR for You
Launching POWR as a native multichain asset brings tangible benefits to POWR holders and the broader community:
- Easy Cross-Chain Transfers: Moving your POWR between Ethereum and Solana is straightforward and quick. With Wormhole Portal, a few clicks is all it takes to transfer POWR across chains – no complex procedures or centralised exchange hops required.
- This seamless transfer capability opens up arbitrage and usage opportunities that were previously cumbersome.
- Dual-Chain Flexibility: Powerledger and POWR holders can choose the network that best fits the purpose at any given time. Need fast, low-cost transactions for high-frequency trading or micro-transactions? Solana’s got you covered. Require Ethereum’s security, or want to use POWR in an Ethereum-based DeFi app? Stick with Ethereum. POWR’s dual-chain presence lets you leverage both blockchains’ strengths on demand.
- Access to More Ecosystems: Being on two chains means POWR can participate in both Ethereum and Solana ecosystems natively. POWR holders gain access to a wider range of DEXs, lending platforms, and dApps across both communities. It also exposes POWR to new users on Solana who might not use Ethereum, and vice versa, growing our community. More chains in the future could further broaden these horizons.
- Lower Fees & More Control: Cross-chain transfers via Wormhole are decentralised and cut out unnecessary middlemen. In the past, if you wanted to move assets between chains, you might deposit to a centralised exchange, trade, and withdraw on the other chain – incurring multiple fees and trusting a custodian. Now, you can transfer POWR directly in a trust-minimised way, paying only the minimal network fees. This gives you more control over your assets and often lower costs for moving between chains
- It’s An Extension of Our Decentralised Ethos: You, the holder, stay in charge of your POWR whether it’s on Ethereum or Solana.
Overall, POWR’s multichain rollout enhances convenience, utility, and user empowerment. As Dr. Jemma Green, our Co-founder and CEO, puts it, “Using Wormhole is a strategic move to enhance multichain interoperability for POWR… providing POWR holders with greater flexibility. Ultimately, it supports our vision of advancing blockchain adoption in energy markets by making it easier for users to access and interact with multiple ecosystems.”
A Smooth Deployment (and a Handy Pro Tip)
Integrating cutting-edge cross-chain tech can be tricky, but Wormhole made the journey remarkably smooth—its ntt tool alone streamlined the deployment and configuration of native tokens and bridging parameters from a single interface. During our test deployment phase, Wormhole’s technical contributors were ready to engage with us with fast, responsive, and extraordinarily helpful advice. Whenever we hit a snag or had a question, their engineers were on hand to guide us—often coming back with solutions or suggestions within hours. This combination of an intuitive ntt tool and top-notch support accelerated our development cycle and gave us full confidence as we moved to mainnet.
It truly felt like a collaborative effort, with Wormhole core contributors as invested in POWR’s success on Solana as we are. Of course, no deployment is complete without a lesson learned. Here’s a light-hearted reminder we’d like to share: many issues ultimately trace back to infrastructure. In our case, more than one mysterious issue encountered during testing turned out to be caused by an RPC node hiccup on our end – not the bridge itself at all.
So always check your RPC services if something’s not working as expected! Sometimes the toughest problems have the simplest fixes (in hindsight). With Wormhole’s support and a few troubleshooting lessons learned, we’ve ensured that bridging POWR is as safe and reliable as it is easy.
Powerledger X Wormhole: Collaboration and Next Steps
This multichain launch is more than just a technical integration – it’s a celebration of collaboration and shared success. By partnering with Wormhole, we combined Powerledger’s vision for democratised energy markets with Wormhole’s best-in-class interoperability tech. The result is a win–win for both communities: POWR holders get a better, more flexible token experience, and Wormhole showcases how its native transfer technology can empower real-world projects. Together, we’re proving that cross-chain innovation isn’t just possible, it’s beneficial for everyone involved. For our community, the immediate next step is simple: enjoy the new capabilities! If you hold POWR on Ethereum and want to try out Solana’s fast ecosystem (or vice versa), you can now do so seamlessly via Wormhole’s Portal.
Looking ahead, Solana is just the beginning. Our approach to multichain doesn’t stop here – we plan to explore additional networks to further expand POWR’s reach (with the same native, no-wrap approach). Any potential new integrations will be evaluated carefully, and only added if there is a specific need, in order to maintain the high technical standards set by this Wormhole collaboration.
Launching POWR as a native multichain asset with Wormhole’s NTT standard is a proud moment for Powerledger. It aligns with our core philosophy of interoperability and user empowerment. We want to thank Wormhole core contributors for their tremendous support, and our community for trusting us to innovate responsibly. Together, we’re bridging not just blockchains, but also the gap between vision and reality in the crypto energy space.
Onwards and upwards – see you on Ethereum and Solana.
